Summative Human Factors Testing
Summative Usability Testing is carried out to gain deeper understanding of the usability of a design which has been finalised, or is currently in the market. The Summative Testing is done when the design has been completed so that the performance can be tested to ensure that it is safe to be released to the wider population.
When Summative Testings are carried out, a sufficient sample size should be attained in order to see reliable statistical results. Furthermore, the acceptance criteria are usually more defined and the results generated are more formal than a Formative Usability Test.
During a Summative Usability Testing, the main aim of the test is to ensure that the design of the product.device is verified and validated and that usability objective have formal acceptance criteria. The testing goes beyond just the device itself, and includes the training, labelling and other documentation.
